Ireland is an important fishing area for whelks. Whelks are fished sustainably with low impact traditional fishing pots.
We still use traditional methods to harvest our whelks. Once caught they are graded by hand on board the fishing boat ensuring that any undersize whelks are returned to the sea immediately and alive. They are fished by small fishing boats that return to harbour the same day ensuring their whelks are fresh and of premium quality for processing.
